Spine surgeon leader to know: Dr. Adam Shimer of University of Virginia Medical Center

Adam, Shimer, MD, is a spine surgeon at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville.

He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at UVA and did an orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh, according to UVA Health's website. He also did a spine surgery fellowship at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia.

His specialties include treating complex and revision cervical spine conditions and adult spinal deformity, according to UVA Health. Dr. Shimer is also an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at UVA and is medical director for the orthopedic surgery inpatient unit, according to a UVA Health spokesperson.

He has received multiple awards for his research, according to UVA Health. Dr. Shimer's research has looked at genetic and cellular treatment of degenerative disc disease.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, he told UVA Health. He and his family enjoy travel, the outdoors and gardening.
