Marquette, Mich.-based Pioneer Surgical Technology launched its Streamline minimally invasive spinal fixation system. The device is designed to provide a rigid structure for the thoracolumbar spine without sacrificing flexibility or ease-of-use.

Lanx appointed Dr. Fernando Villamil to surgeon advisory board.
Broomfield, Colo.-based Lanx has appointed Fernando Villamil, MD, to its surgeon advisory board and the company's director of education for Latin America.

Study: people with health insurance hospitalized less, incur lower costs.
Those covered by health insurance are hospitalized less than those who are not and incur lower healthcare costs, according to a study in Health Affairs. In the year following enrollment in a public insurance program, inpatient hospitalizations decreased 59 percent, and preventable hospitalizations decreased 48 percent.

Top Nursing releases statistics on back pain.
Top Nursing Programs released its "Back Pain 101" report, which explores the incidence of back pain, healthcare costs, lifestyle costs, causes and prevention. The report showed that $86 billion is spent in total national healthcare costs for back pain and 80 percent of Americans will experience back pain in their lifetime.

World Spine Care hosts first health conference.
World Spine Care, a multinational non-profit organization, recently hosted its first ever health conference in Mahalapye, Botswana. WSC was founded in 2008 by Scott Halderman, DC, MD, PhD, to address the lack of treatment for musculoskeletal conditions in the developing world.
