Louisiana Spine & Sports owner gets 18 months in prison for taking kickbacks

Gray Wesley Barrow, MD, was sentenced April 15 to prison for his role in a healthcare kickbacks scheme, according to the U.S. Justice Department.

Four details:

1. Dr. Barrow, a 61-year-old co-owner of Baton Rouge-based Louisiana Spine & Sports, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks in November 2018.

2. Dr. Barrow admitted to sending urine specimens from his patients to a drug-testing lab in exchange for a percentage of the reimbursement Medicare and other insurance companies paid to the lab.

3. Between January 2014 and July 2016, Dr. Borrow collected $1.58 million in disbursements from the lab, including $336,000 in kickbacks related to Medicare beneficiaries.

4. Dr. Barrow was also ordered to pay $336,000 in restitution and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
