California patient recovering well after milestone endoscopic spine procedure

The first patient to have an endoscopic lumbar fusion with robot-assisted technology in California is going well six months after the procedure, San Ramon (Calif.) Regional Medical Center said Feb. 17.

Saqib Hasan, MD, performed the surgery in August, according to a news release from the medical center. The procedure combined endoscopic and robotic-guided technologies and allowed Dr. Hasan to operate through a smaller incision.

"Endoscopic techniques really represent a paradigm shift in spine surgery," Dr. Hasan said in the news release. "By leveraging these technologies, surgeons can treat spinal problems in a truly minimally invasive way. By using advanced miniature cameras (endoscopes) and computer-based robotic arms to provide a more targeted and accurate approach, we can achieve similar results to more traditional open procedures with less pain and quicker recovery."
