Laura Anderson, MD, the first female neurosurgeon in Sacramento, Calif. is retiring after more than 30 years in the field.
She has been one of about 400 female surgeons in the U.S. and 49,940 globally, according to a July 31 news release from her practice. Dr. Anderson is also among 3.6 percent of female surgeons who have practiced for 31 years or longer.
Dr. Anderson earned her medical degree at the University of Nevada in Reno and completed her residency at the University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. She initially looked into a career in plastic surgery but stepped into neurosurgery when a resident was killed in an accident.
During her career, she became one of a few female neurosurgeons in the U.S. to own her own business in private practice.
