Hospital for Special Surgery appoints neurology, anesthesiology chiefs

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery has appointed Lan Zhou, MD, as neurologist-in-chief and chair of HSS' department of neurology and Stavros Memtsoudis, MD, as anesthesiologist-in-chief and director of the department of anesthesiology, critical care and pain management. 

Dr. Memtsoudis succeeds Gregory Liguori, MD, who has led the department for 21 years. Dr. Liguori will continue to practice at HSS. 

Dr. Memtsoudis is a board-certified anesthesiologist and critical care physician. He is widely recognized for his clinical expertise in the perioperative care of orthopedic patients with advanced cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and his prolific research into perioperative care. His role is effective immediately. 

Dr. Zhou succeeds interim chair Matthew Fink, MD, who will return full-time to his role as chair of the department of neurology at Weill Cornell Medicine and neurologist-in-chief at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. 

Dr. Fink served as interim leader after Dale Lange, MD, retired following 13 years leading the department at HSS, according to an Oct. 25 press release. 

Dr. Zhou is a neuromuscular specialist who specializes in small-fiber neuropathy, inflammatory myopathy, myasthenia gravis and neuromuscular pathology. In her new role at HSS, she will establish a clinical diagnostic neuromuscular pathology laboratory. She will join the hospital on March 1, 2024.
