Spine surgeon publishes memoir

Alvin Crawford, MD, who founded Crawford Spine Center at Cincinnati Children’s, published an autobiography called The Bone Doctor's Concerto, the hospital said March 27.

Four things to know:

1. Dr. Crawford was the first African American to graduate from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine in Memphis. 

2. Dr. Crawford co-authored several clinical research studies and is a recognized leader on scoliosis correction techniques.

3. He retired in 2006 after serving as director of orthopedics at Cincinnati Children’s for 29 years.

4. Music has been an important part of Dr. Crawford's life and played in bands after his residency, he said in a March 26 feature in Cincinnati Magazine.
