Neurosurgery has the highest average annual pay among physicians, according to Doximity's Physician Compensation Report 2024.
Doximity surveyed more than 33,000 physicians between January and December 2023 for the report.
Five notes:
1. The average annual neurosurgeon pay is $763,908, the report said. Thoracic surgery and orthopedic surgery followed with average annual salaries of $720,634 and $654,815, respectively.
2. Neurosurgery pay dipped slightly from 2022 but remained the top-paid specialty. The average pay according to Doximity's 2023 Physician Compensation Report was $788,313 per year.
3. Single-specialty group physicians saw the highest average pay across all specialties with an average of $461,368 annually. Multispecialty group physicians saw an average of $447,546 per year, and solo practice physicians saw an average of $443,274 per year.
4. Hospital physicians saw an average yearly compensation of $422,146.
5. Gender pay gaps remained in 2023, the report said. However the gap decreased from 26% in 2022 to 23%. Orthopedics has the largest pay gap with male surgeons making an average $661,801 and female surgeons making an average $559,222.
