Ascension St. Vincent's Southside Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., is the first in the region to add the TOPS system for spine surgeries.
The TOPS system can address a variety of conditions related to lower back and leg pain and is an alternative to spinal fusions, according to a July 15 news release shared with Becker's. The device allows for improved rotation, bending and extension compared to spinal fusion.
Recent studies found the TOPS system was superior to fusion to address spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis, and it showed better effectiveness than transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion.
