5 numbers shaping spine right now

Spine

Here are five numbers shaping the spine industry right now, as reported by Becker's:

17% — The percentage of spinal decompression and/or laminectomy procedures that will be performed in ASCs by 2033, following the general migration of spinal procedures to the outpatient setting.

8.9 minutes — The average interpretation time for MRI readings using AI, as opposed to 23 minutes without MRI. This could have a significant impact on lumbar spine MRI analysis.

$53,366 — The cost of spinal fusion in Alaska, the most expensive state to have the procedure performed in. In a ranking of all 50 states and the District of Columbia, the most affordable state for spinal fusion was Iowa, where the average cash price to patients was $37,538.

30% — The percentage of orthopedic surgeons that are in private practice, with the remaining 70% being employed. Ten years ago, the inverse was true.

200+ — The number of ASCs performing outpatient spine surgeries in 2024.
