The Scoliosis Research Society and North American Spine Society honored multiple spine surgeons in the third quarter of 2024.
Nine things to know:
1. Addisu Mesfin, MD, was awarded NASS' annual Henry Farfan Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions in spine-related basic science research.
2. Charles Reitman, MD, was awarded the David Selby Award in recognition for outstanding contributions in spine-related basic science research. He has been a NASS member since 2001, and served on the board of directors from 2009 to 2022.
3. Nicholas Theodore, MD, was awarded the Leon Wiltse Award in recognition for excellence in leadership and/or clinical research in spine care. He has been a NASS member since 1998, pioneering research in the realms of brain and spinal cord injury, robotic surgery and advocacy.
4. Philip Schneider, MD, was awarded the Spine Advocacy Award, which recognizes members of the North American Spine Society who have made exceptional contributions to the federal advocacy efforts on behalf of patients and members of the society. He has been a NASS member for 33 years and served as advocacy council chair since 2018.
5. Christopher M. Bono, MD, was awarded the NASS Past Presidents award. He has been a NASS member since 2002 and since 2018 has been The Spine Journal’s editor in chief.
6. Charles Johnston, MD, and Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei earned the SRS Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Johnston is a professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and a reviewer for The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Children's Orthopaedics.
7. Dr. Boachie-Adjei earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency at Hospital for Special Surgery, both in New York City. He's won multiple national and international humanitarian and philanthropic awards.
8. Richard Hodes, MD, earned the Walter P. Blount Humanitarian award. He started a spine practice with Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei and has lived and worked in Ethiopia for more than 35 years. Since, the practice has seen more than 1,600 surgeries.
9. Marcus Mazur, MD, earned the 2024 Biedermann Innovation award for research on robotic cervical management. He was awarded $50,000 over two years.
