From new technologies and surgical techniques, several hospitals and practices have added to their spine and orthopedic programs in September.
Eight things to know:
1. Think Surgical's upgraded TMini robot, version 1.1, was used in its first total knee replacement. Alexander Sah, MD, performed the debut case at Washington Outpatient Surgery Center in Fremont, Calif.
2. Surgeons at Detroit-based Henry Ford Hospital became the first in Michigan to perform spine surgery using OnPoint's AR Spine System.
3. Prashant Deshmane, MD, has performed Utica, N.Y.-based Wynn Hospital's first robotic hip procedure using Stryker's Mako SmartRobotics.
4. The Detroit VA's orthopedic surgery department completed its first robotic-assisted hip replacement procedure with the Mako robot.
5. Dennis Crawford, MD, professor of orthopedics at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore., has successfully performed the first patella lift procedure in the U.S.
6. Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute has performed the first Corin Apollo robotic knee replacement on the West Coast.
7. Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has completed the world’s first all-plastic total ankle replacement surgery.
8. Christopher C. Hasty, MD, completed the first BEAR implant procedure Sept. 3 at ECU Health in Greenville, N.C.
