Report: Spine Surgery Centers of Excellence Don't Guarantee Improved Outcomes

Spine

On average, spine surgery centers of excellence have similar complication and readmission rates as compared with other hospitals, according to a study published in Medical Care.

Researchers analyzed a total of 29,295 cervical simple fusion procedures, 27,214 lumbar simple fusion procedures and 28,911 lumbar discectomy/decompression procedures.

Of the cervical simple fusion procedures, 42 percent were performed at a hospital designated as a spine surgery center of excellence. Of the lumbar simple fusion procedures and lumbar discectomy/decompression procedures, 42 percent and 47 percent respectively were performed at a spine surgery center of excellence.

The study found that across the three types of spine surgery, there was no difference in the composite complication rate or readmission rate.
