The Scoliosis Research Society announced 2014 awards and scholarships.
SRS awarded the Lifetime Achievement Awards to Alvin H. Crawford, MD, and David S. Bradford, MD.
Dr. Crawford is professor emeritus of orthopedic surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He is also founding director of the Crawford Spine Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and was honored with the dedication of the Crawford Chair in Pediatric Orthopaedics in 2004.
Dr. Crawford was the first African-American graduate of the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee and performed his fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital, New England Baptist Hospital, Children's Hospital Medical Center and the Alfred I. duPont Institute. In 2007, Dr. Crawford received the AAOS Diversity Award for his work in the field.
"Being able to accept other people's values, then relate and communicate. That's what diversity is," said Dr. Crawford in an AAOS news release about the 2007 award. "I see myself in everyone I train, and recently I've come to see them as training me. I've been learning for the last 20 years. I still haven't gotten there, but I've learned a lot from people who don't necessarily look or think like me."
During his career, Dr. Crawford has been honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in Medicine from the Center for Closing the Health Gap in Greater Cincinnati and the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. He has also served as president of the Robert J. Gladden Society.
Dr. Bradford is a professor and chair emeritus at the UCSF Medical Center Orthopaedic Institute. He has a professional interest in scoliosis and degenerative disorders. Previously Dr. Bradford served as chief of spine surgery at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bradford sits on scientific advisory boards for NuVasive and SpineUniverse. He is also a founding member of the Twin Cities Spine Center and authored several articles based on his research.
