The use of iliac wing fixation is likely to improve lumbosacral fusion rates with an acceptable complication rate and could prevent sacral fractures, sacral screw failures and sacroiliac arthritis, according to an article published in the Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques.
Researchers examined 78 ambulatory adult patients who received bilateral iliac wing fixation below long fusion constructs. Patients were analyzed clinically and radiographically for complications and completed the Zuckerman questionnaire.
Complications were found in 42 patients with an overall complication rate of 54 percent. However, 78 percent of the patients reported good or excellent results on the Zuckerman questionnaire. The average sagittal balance preoperatively was +10 and improved to an average of +2.5 postoperatively. The average major curve coronal plane deformity was 61 degree and improved to 29 degree.
