Spine surgeon Caleb Behrend, MD, is leading a team of engineers who are developing screws fitted with sensors to calculate the status of fracture healing.
Three things to know:
1. The innovation would help physicians know when patients can safely apply weight to their fracture as it heals.
2. The engineers, as part of Clemson, S.C.-based startup Aravis BioTech, are one of three finalists for the InnoVision Technology Development Award, which recognizes innovation, leadership and technological excellence in South Carolina.
3. Dr. Behrend completed a spine surgery fellowship at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia before joining Phoenix-based OrthoArizona in 2017.
