Darrel Brodke, MD, has been appointed chair of the orthopedic department at the University of Utah's Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine and CEO of orthopedic musculoskeletal services for U of U Health, both in Salt Lake City.
Beginning July 1, Dr. Brodke will oversee all clinical, research and education programs in the department, of which he is currently vice chair. He will be responsible for recruiting, retaining and developing a high-quality faculty, and supporting their patient care, education and research needs.
Dr. Brodke joined the University of Utah in 1997 to lead the orthopedic spine section. He is also a professor in the orthopedic department and an adjunct professor in neurosurgery.
His research interests include spinal biomechanics, spinal deformity care and patient reported outcomes.
Dr. Brodke succeeds Charles Saltzman, MD, who advanced the department from receiving no National Institutes of Health funding in 2005 to being ranked No. 1 among orthopedic programs for NIH funding in 2019, the university said in a June 15 news release.
