Here are 10 sports medicine physicians who have received awards for their research. Russell Warren, MD (Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City). Dr. Warren's research involves static and dynamic control of shoulder and knee stability, design of shoulder replacement systems and a study of soft tissue healing and methods to promote cell migration. He has received the AOSSM's O'Donoghue Award for sports medicine research multiple times. He has been a surgeon-in-chief at the Hospital for Special Surgery for nearly two decades. Dr. Warren's areas of interest include shoulder and knee instability, ligament reconstruction, treatment for rotator cuff diseases and joint replacement. Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Warren serves as a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. During his career, he has served as the co-editor-in-chief of Techniques in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. Dr. Warren earned his medical degree from State University of New York at Syracuse and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Warren also completed a fellowship in shoulder surgery at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City.

Thomas L. Wickiewicz, MD (Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City). Dr. Wickiewicz has been with the Hospital for Special Surgery since 1982, and he's currently the Attending Orthopedic Surgeon. He specializes in sports medicine, meniscus surgery, ACL surgery and shoulder surgery. He has published more than 100 scientific papers on his research on knee and shoulder surgery. He's a three-time winner of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine O'Donoghue Award for sports medicine research. Dr. Wickiewicz's research focuses on lower extremity realignment therapy for the treatment of medial knee osteoarthritis and revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in adolescents. He's also a three-time winner of the Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society. Dr. Wickiewicz earned his medical degree from the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery from the Hospital for Special Surgery and a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of California Los Angeles Medical Center.

Brian Cole, MD (Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush). Dr. Cole is the section head of the Cartilage Research Program and Cartilage Restoration Center at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He has authored and edited hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, including textbooks on arthroscopy, sports medicine and cartilage transplantation. His research interests are cartilage transplantation, rotator cuff healing and shoulder instability. He won The Lewis Clark Wagner Award for a resident with excellence in orthopedic surgery research. Dr. Cole received his medical degree from the University of Chicago. He completed his residency at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and his sports medicine fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a team physician for the Chicago Bulls and a co-team physician for the Chicago White Sox.

Richard J. Steadman, MD (The Steadman Clinic, Vail, Colo.). Dr. Steadman is the founder and managing partner of The Steadman Clinic. He received the Richard O'Connor Research Award at the Arthroscopy Association of North America annual meeting. Dr. Steadman received this award for his paper titled "Ten Year Survivorship Following Knee Arthroscopy in Patients With Moderate to Severe Osteoarthritis of the Knee." He has also developed the arthroscopic treatment package for patients with osteoarthritis who want to remain more active than a total knee replacement would allow. Co-authors on the paper were Karen Briggs, Lauren Matheny and Henry Ellis, MD. Dr. Steadman received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed an internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans and then served in the U.S. Army for two years. He then completed his residency at Charity Hospital.

A. David Davis, MD (Access Sports Medicine & Orthopaedics, Exeter, N.H.). Dr. Davis is an orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy. He specializes in the treatment of knee, shoulder and hip injuries. Dr. Davis has published research articles on shoulder, knew and orthopedic science topics. He has won the Aircast Award for Basic Science from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Written in collaboration with Mark Steiner, MD, the paper came at the conclusion of significant research on ACL reconstruction during his fellowship at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. He's currently involved in orthopedic research on ACL anatomy and how it related to techniques for repairing ACL injuries. Dr. Davis received his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Boston University Medical Center. He is fellowship-trained in arthroscopy and sports medicine from the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston.

Scott A. Rodeo, MD (Hospital for Special Surgery, New York City). Dr. Rodeo is a clinician-scientist at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He also works as a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and co-chief of the sports medicine and should service at the Hospital for Special Surgery. He specializes in sports medicine, injuries of the knee, shoulder, ankle and elbow, arthritis surgery and joint replacement surgery. Dr. Rodeo has received many awards, including the Excellence in Research Award from the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. His research includes evaluation of cellular and molecular mechanism of tendon-to-bone healing, evaluation of novel materials for meniscus replacement and meniscus tissue engineering. He received his medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College. He completed both his residency and fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

David C. Flanigan, MD (Ohio State University, Columbus). Dr. Flanigan is the assistant professor of orthopedics at Ohio State University. He serves as the director of cartilage restoration program and the team physician for the OSU athletic department. He's board certified in orthopedic sports medicine. Dr. Flanigan's specialty is knee-related injuries, with emphasis on acute and complex knee injuries, knee ligament reconstruction and cartilage restoration. He's received several awards for his research, including the Resident Research Award from the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the Richard O'Connor Award. He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine in Iowa City. He completed his orthopedic residency at Northeastern University in Evanston, Ill., and a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.

Annunziato Amendola, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City). Dr. Amendola is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist at the University of Iowa. He serves on the board of directors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and also sits on the board of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. During his career, Dr. Amendola has received more than 15 awards for his research from various professional societies, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Cabaud Award for Excellence in Basic Science Research and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Roger Mann Award for best clinical research paper. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers. Dr. Amendola earned his medical degree and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.

Christopher D. Harner, MD (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). Dr. Harner is the medical director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for Sports Medicine and co-director of the sports orthopedic research lab. He has a professional interest in treating ligament and cartilage injuries to the knee. He is the president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Harner serves on the editorial review board for three orthopedic sports medicine journals. Among his research awards are the AOSSM O'Donoghue Sports Injury Award, AOSSM Cabaud Award and AOSSM Excellence in Research Award. His research focuses on surgical techniques of the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. Dr. Harner received his medical degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and completed his residency at UPMC.

Asheesh Bedi, MD (University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Mich.). Dr. Bedi is an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Michigan. His clinical interests include rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, ACL injury, knee ligament injuries, shoulder arthritis, hip injuries, hip dysplasia and pain in athletes and more. He's a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Arthroscopy Association of North America. He received a AOSSM Cabaud Memorial Award for his work with ACL reconstructions and meniscus deficient knees. He's currently doing research on hip impingement, ACL injuries, rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, meniscal injuries and tendon-to-bone healing. He received his medical training from the University of Michigan Medical School. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery from the University of Michigan Health System and fellowships in sports medicine and orthopedics and hip arthroscopy from the Hospital for Special Surgery.
