A study published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery examined advanced hip and knee osteoarthritis patients to develop the best methods of informed treatment decision making.
The researchers found using DVDs, booklets and health coaches helped patients quickly and confidently arrive at treatment decisions, according to a news release from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
The researchers randomized 123 patients considered medically appropriate for hip or knee replacements to shared decision-making intervention or usual care. Around 58 percent of the patients in the intervention group reached an informed decision during the first visit compared to 33 percent in the control group.
There was no significant different between groups in the percentage of patients choosing surgery.
