NFL, FIFA & others convene on concussions

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The National Football League medical professionals are partnering with their counterparts in FIFA for better identification, management and treatment in athletes with concussions, according to a Times Free Press report.

An NFL grant funded a new "think tank" to examine concussions, with Rich Ellenbogen, MD, as chairman of the NFL's head, neck and spine committee in attendance. He promotes communication between the sports and leagues around the world to find the best methods for identification and treatment.

Concussions were a major issue in the World Cup recently held in Brazil and FIFA was criticized for their approach, which some say wasn't effective. The NFL has also been under fire in recent years for not identifying and managing players with concussions appropriately.

There are more meetings planned between these healthcare professionals, which could happen again even this year.
