The University of Kentucky in Lexington and the Jockey’s Guild are preparing for a three-year pilot study designed to become the first comprehensive jockey concussion management protocol study, according to The Horse.
Carl Mattacola, PhD, director of the Graduate Athletic Training Program and a professor in the University of Kentucky College of Health Sciences in Lexington, will oversee the study.
Here are four points:
1. The study is scheduled to begin this summer.
2. Jockeys participating in the study are required to have an active account with the Jockey Health Information System.
3. This jockey concussion management protocol follows on the heels of other concussion studies in other major sports such as the NFL, NBA, MLS, MLB, NCAA and NASCAR.
4. Dr. Mattacola earned his masters and doctor of philosophy degrees in sports medicine from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
