Yankees righthander Nathan Eovaldi is out for the season and likely 2017 after a total tear of his flexor tendon and a partial tear of his UCL, Newsday reports. Here's what you need to know.
1. Christopher Ahmad, MD, of Columbia Orthopedics, N.Y., will likely perform the surgery.
2. This is the second TJ surgery for Mr. Eovaldi. He partially tore his UCL in two spots while in high school. "It's a huge blow," he said. "It's my second one so it's a big deal. Hopefully everything goes well with the surgery, and I'll work hard to go back."
3. Mr. Eovaldi consistently throws his fastball in the high 90s according to PitchFx data. A recent study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine shows a correlation between fastball pitch velocity and UCL tears.
4. Dr. Ahmad is the Yankee's and the New York City Football Clubs' team physician. Additionally, he is a professor of orthopedic surgery at the Columbia University Medical Center.
5. Dr. Ahmad is a member of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association. He has been the recipient of several awards for outstanding research in the field of sports medicine.
