Richard Edelson, MD, and Jonathan Greenleaf, MD, of Sports Medicine Oregon recently performed the first full meniscus replacement in the state with the NUsurface Implant. Here's what you should know.
1. The surgery center is one of 10 nationwide that is enrolling patients into the Safety Using NUsurface clinical trial. The trial is testing the NUsurface Meniscus Implant.
2. Because of the meniscus' limited ability to heal itself, surgery is required to fix it. More than 1 million partial meniscectomies are performed annually, and patients still have knee pain after.
3. Fifty-nine-year-old Don Bennett was the first patient to receive the meniscus implant in Oregon.
4. The Safety Using NUsurface trial is testing the implant in 120 patients as it attempts to gain FDA approval.
