University of Pittsburgh School of the Health Sciences Chair Freddie Fu, MD was bestowed one of the highest honors from the City of Pittsburgh; his own day.
Here's what you should know.
1. The Council of the City of Pittsburgh dedicated Sept. 13 to be Dr. Freddie Fu Day in the City of Pittsburgh. Councilman Dan Gilman sponsored the measure.
2. Dr. Fu moved to Pittsburgh from Hong Kong to attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
3. Dr. Fu was an integral part in establishing the Sports and Preventive Institute, in Pittsburgh. He was also the head team physician and orthopedic surgeon for the University of Pittsburgh Athletic Department.
4. Dr. Fu also designed and oversaw construction of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, "which has grown to become one of the world's largest and most well-regarded sports medicine facilities, the proclamation read.
5. Dr. Fu is internationally recognized for his research concerning the Anterior Cruciate Ligament.
6. Dr. Fu has edited 26 orthopedic textbooks, authored 79 papers on sports medicine, contributed to 215 research publications, presented 650 presentations worldwide and completed more than 7,000 ACL surgeries in his career.
He was also the first physician from Pittsburgh to be inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame.
7. Outside of his professional career he is highly active with the community.
