Freddie Fu, MD, the head football physician for the University of Pittsburgh, will take the field for Pitt at halftime as the University recognizes his 30 years of service, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports.
In addition to the pregame ceremony, Dr. Fu will lead the student section in its cherished tradition; the singing of Neil Diamond's classic "Sweet Caroline."
Here's what you should know.
1. Dr. Fu is also the head orthopedic surgeon for the athletic department, the chairman of the university's orthopedic department and the chairman of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
2. Coach Pat Narduzzi said to Pittsburgh Tribune Review of Dr. Fu, "He's like the guru. Anytime we have a question about somebody, we are able to bounce things off him. He's one of the best in the world. I don't even think I'd say in the U.S."
3. Dr. Fu earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh and has been recognized across North America, Europe and Japan for his research on the anterior cruciate ligament.
4. Since the late 1970s, Dr. Fu believes he has performed nearly 7,000 ACL surgeries.
5. Dr. Fu has many legacies, but one of the most notable ones is the construction of the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex, which he helped to design.
