The Atlanta Hawks plan to move into a new practice facility built in collaboration with Atlanta-based Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Center and Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Peak Performance Project to improve athlete care and medical research capabilities, according to 11 Alive.
Here's what you need to know:
1. The new $50 million facility will be 90,000-square feet.
2. The collaborators hope to prevent injuries, keep players healthier and extend careers together.
3. Many NBA teams are using increased funding to build and invest in facilities with higher-quality medical offerings.
4. P3 hopes its relationship with Emory will allow it to publish more of its findings in widely-ready medical journals, according to the report.
5. Emory's entire sports medicine division will move into the practice facility. The division includes:
- 13 sports medicine physicians
- High-tech CT, MRI and X-ray scanners
Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center Director Scott Boden, MD, said, "Marrying P3 and what they already do with a group of academics and sports medicine physicians, we think not only are we going to raise each other's game…We're going to marry that science with our clinical science and develop rehab protocols and prevention protocols at an even higher level."
