Lawrenceville, Ga.-based Gwinnett Medical Center awarded Freddie Fu, MD, of University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine the Pioneer of Sports Medicine Award, according to Gwinnett Daily Post.

1. The Pioneer of Sports Medicine Award honors a physician who has made a big impact on the sports medicine field and the treatment of athletes.
2. Dr. Fu helped establish the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine Sports and Preventative Medicine Institute in 1985.
3. He has served as head team physician for the University's athletic department since 1986.
4. Dr. Fu also established the school's sports medicine fellowship program for physicians.
Dr. Fu said, "I am honored and humbled to be among the group of physicians who have received the Pioneer of Sports Medicine award over the years."
