Dr. James Andrews to perform Tommy John on Mariners Drew Smyly; 12 to 15 months of rehab expected

James Andrews, MD, will perform Tommy John surgery on the left elbow of Seattle Mariners' pitcher Drew Smyly.

Here's what you should know:

 

1. The surgery is scheduled for July 6.

 

2. The Mariners placed Mr. Smyly on the 10-day disabled list on April 2. He left a spring training game with a left arm flexor strain.

 

3. Dr. Andrews is a founding partner of Gulf Breeze, Fla.-based Andrews Institute for Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatment.

 

4. Dr. Andrews is the orthopedic medical director for the Tampa Bay Rays.
