David Altchek, MD, will repair the labrum and anterior capsule in the shoulder of Boston Red Sox pitcher Carson Smith, the Providence Journal reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. Mr. Smith also possibly injured his rotator cuff.

2. Mr. Smith sustained the injuries when he slammed his glove in the dugout after allowing a home run to Oakland Athletics' Khris Davis.

3. Dr. Altchek will perform corrective and exploratory surgery to correct the known issues and examine Mr. Smith's rotator cuff.

4. Dr. Altchek is an orthopedic surgeon and co-chief emeritus in New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery's sports medicine and shoulder service.

5. Dr. Altchek also is the New York Mets' medical director and a consultant for the NBA. He was the North American director for the Association of Tennis Professionals and a team physician for the U.S. Davis Cup team.
