Keith Meister, MD, performed arthroscopic debridement on the right elbow of Chicago Cubs pitcher Yu Darvish, USA Today reports.
Here's what you should know:
1. After an MRI scan in August, Mr. Darvish was declared out for the remainder of the season due to a stress reaction in his right elbow.
2. Mr. Darvish visited James Andrews, MD, who recommended surgery.
3. Dr. Meister performed the debridement Sept. 12, and Cubs Manager Joe Maddon said Mr. Darvish should be recovered and ready for spring training in 2019.
4. Dr. Meister is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers and director of Arlington, Texas-based TMI Sports Medicine. He previously served as the head team physician for the Dallas Stars and USA Hockey.
5. Dr. Andrews is a founding partner of Gulf Breeze, Fla.-based Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatments.
6. Dr. Andrews is the Tampa Bay Rays' orthopedic medical director.
