Orthopedic surgeon Joseph Torg, MD, and his wife, Barbara Torg, established a scholarship fund for medical students at Philadelphia-based Temple University Lewis Katz School of Medicine.
Here are six things to know:
1. The Joe Torg Scholarship Fund aims to support medical students in need of financial assistance by providing full-tuition scholarships for students who have attended public, private or parochial schools in Philadelphia.
2. Dr. Torg and his colleague Ted Quedenfeld established the first university-based sports medicine clinic at Temple in 1974.
3. With expertise in sports medicine, Dr. Torg previously was a team physician for the Philadelphia 76ers, Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles.
4. In the 1980s, Dr. Torg served as the physician consultant for former President Ronald Reagan's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
5. Dr. Torg is well known for his research on the incidence of catastrophic spinal injury in football from spear tackling, which caused the NCAA and high school federation to ban in 1976.
6. In 2018, Dr. Torg was recognized as the Association of Fundraising Professionals' 2018 Philanthropist of the Year.
