Neal ElAttrache, MD, will repair the partially torn ulnar collateral ligament of Milwaukee Brewers' reliever Corey Knebel, MLB.com reports.
What you should know:
1. Mr. Knebel first tore his UCL in 2014. He opted for treatment instead of surgery and made a nearly full recovery. He joined the Brewers in January 2015 and pitched three full seasons for the team.
2. He then experienced discomfort in his elbow after a March 17 relief appearance. Testing showed new UCL damage. He could either opt for surgery or try the conservative approach again, which would have shut him down until late July. He opted for Tommy John surgery, which Dr. ElAttrache will perform April 3.
3. Dr. ElAttrache is an orthopedic surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles. He is the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Foundation board chairman and program director for the Kerlan-Jobe fellowship.
4. Dr. ElAttrache is the head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Rams. He is also an orthopedic consultant to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and PGA Tour.
