David Altchek, MD, will repair the right elbow of New York Yankees pitcher Luis Severino, MLB.com reports.
What you should know:
1. Mr. Severino suffered from arm discomfort last year. He took a conservative approach and returned to the mound at the end of last year. He complained of similar discomfort when throwing low-effort pitches from flat ground at the beginning of spring training this year.
2. New York City-based Columbia Orthopedic Surgery's Christopher Ahmad, MD, examined Mr. Severino's arm this week and found a partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament.
3. Dr. Altchek, the team and Mr. Severino agreed that Tommy John surgery was the appropriate treatment. Dr. Altchek will perform the procedure Feb. 27 at New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery.
4. Dr. Altchek is an attending orthopedic surgeon and co-chief emeritus of HSS' Sports Medicine Institute. He is the medical director for the New York Mets and a medical consultant for the NBA. He is the founding medical director of HSS Florida.
