Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner tested positive for COVID-19 during the sixth game of the World Series Oct. 27, The Washington Post reports.
What you should know:
1. Mr. Turner was pulled from the game in the eighth inning. During the game, MLB was informed of Mr. Turner's positive test result, which led to his removal. Mr. Turner had an inconclusive test Oct. 26 and was retested.
2. The Dodgers then won the World Series. Mr. Turner initially tweeted, "Can't believe I couldn't be out there to celebrate with my guys!" He then came out onto the field to take a picture with the World Series trophy. MLB security attempted to get Mr. Turner to leave the field, but he refused.
3. While on the field, he hugged Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw while both were wearing masks. Mr. Turner then removed his mask for team photos with the trophy, sitting next to noted cancer survivor and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.
Mr. Roberts said in an on-field interview, "He was in the team picture. I didn't touch him, just because I didn’t know, but it was really crazy and I was really disappointed that, obviously with that, he couldn't be out there to celebrate with us."
4. Andrew Friedman, Dodgers president of baseball operations, defended Mr. Turner initially but said his choice to not wear a mask was concerning. He said, "If there's people around him without a mask, that's not good optics at all."
5. Each member of the Dodgers took a rapid COVID-19 test when they returned to the hotel Oct. 27.
