From an $85 million center receiving approval, to the New York Mets' new team physician, here are nine key sports medicine updates in the first half of 2021:
1. Irvine, Calif.-based Hoag Orthopedic Institute named David Gazzaniga, MD, as division chief of sports medicine.
2. The American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy has honored Robert LaPrade, MD, PhD, with its 2021 Jack C. Hughston Sports Physician Award, the organization's highest individual honor.
3. The Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society gave Arthur Valadie, MD, a plaque recognizing his 20 years of service.
4. Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen has opened a $12 million sports medicine center.
5. Orthopedic surgeon Matthew Pifer, MD, has been named team physician for Santa Barbara (Calif.) City College's football program.
6. USA Baseball has named orthopedic surgeon Daryl Osbahr, MD, and Josh Bloom, MD, a family medicine and sports medicine physician, as chief medical officers of the newly formed USA Baseball Medical Oversight Commission.
7. The University of Arkansas Medical Sciences board of trustees on March 18 gave the green light for an $85 million orthopedic and sports medicine project to be developed in Little Rock
8. Kathryn McElheny, MD, became the new head team physician for the New York Mets.
9. Sports medicine physician Payton Fennell, DO, was named Novant Health’s primary care sports medicine director for the greater Charlotte, N.C., market.
