The NFL launched a program to diversify the pipeline of students interested in sports medicine and orthopedics.
The NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative is a partnership between the NFL and four historically Black colleges and universities, according to a May 24 post on the league's website. Sixteen students will participate in the inaugural session and will complete a one-month clinical rotation with NFL clubs during the 2022 season.
The participating colleges are Los Angeles-based Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Washington, D.C.-based Howard University College of Medicine, Atlanta-based Morehouse School of Medicine and Nashville, Tenn.-based Meharry Medical College. The participating teams are the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans and Washington Commanders.
In 2023, the program will expand institutions and medical disciplines.
