The American College of Sports Medicine, along with five other professional organizations, released a statement on the necessity of the team physician to providing treatment for athletes.
The "Team Physician Consensus State 2013 Update" revises recommendations originally published in 2000 with new guidance on issues that evolved over the past decade and added sections with guidance for ethical and medicolegal issues for team physicians.
The update also upholds the high standards set in the original document and includes new outlines for medical qualifications, education, medical administrative duties and responsibilities recommended for team physicians.
