Study: Young Patients May Not Need Surgery For a Torn ACL

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Young patients with a torn ACL might not always need surgery, according to a study titled "A Randomized Trial of Treatment for Acute Anterior Cruciate Ligament Tears" published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The researchers conducted a randomized, controlled trial with 121 active young adults suffering from acute ACL injury, comparing those who received structured rehabilitation in addition to early ACL reconstruction with those who received structured rehabilitation with the option of later ACL reconstruction.

The researchers found there was no significant difference between the two treatment groups. As a result, the research concluded that for active adults with ACL tears, receiving early ACL reconstruction was not advantageous for the patient. Additionally, those who delayed the ACL reconstruction reduced their frequency of surgical reconstruction.
