Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Baseball is a highly active sport where athletes can easily suffer ACL, elbow and ankle injuries. As a result, major league teams often add orthopedic physicians to their roster. These physicians treat our favorite players' minor and major injuries to make sure they are in top condition for their next big game.

Michael Lee, MD. Dr. Lee practices orthopedics with North Scottsdale Orthopaedic in Phoenix. He earned his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine in Tucson.

Atlanta Braves


Joe Chandler, MD. Dr. Chandler practices with Resurgens Orthopedics in Atlanta. He earned his medical degree from Emory University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Yale University and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He is a member of the Shoulder and Elbow Society as well as the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Chandler has served as the chairman of the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Board.

Xavier Duralde, MD. Dr. Duralde practices at Peachtree Orthopedic Clinic in Atlanta,. He earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York where he also completed a fellowship in elbow and shoulder surgery. Thomas J. Gill, MD. Dr. Gill serves as chief of the Massachusetts General Hospital Sports Medical Service. His clinical research interests include knee and shoulder injuries with a particular interest in knee joint biomechanics. Dr. Gill also serves as medical director the Red Sox as well as medical director for the New England Patriots and is a team physician for the Boston Bruins. Stephen Adams, MD. Dr. Adams is a professor of medicine and emergency medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. He earned his medical degree at Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed his residency at McGaw Medical Center, Northwestern University. Stephen Gryzlo, MD.

Dr. Bush-Joseph is a professor and physician with Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, has a focus in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He received his medical degree from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency at Rush. He serves as a member of the American Board of Orthpaedic Surgery sports medicine examination committee. In addition to serving with the White Sox, Dr. Bush-Joseph serves as an associate team physician for the Chicago Bulls. He is an elected member of the Major League Baseball Medical Advisory Board.

Bernard R. Bach Jr., MD. Dr. Bach has a focus in sports medicine, knee and shoulder at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush in Chicago. He earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his residency at Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. Dr. Bach has been director of sports medicine at Rush since 1986 and has published over 375 scientific papers, abstracts and book chapters. Gregory P. Nicholson, MD.
Dr. Nicholson, a physician with Midwest Orthopedics at Rush in Chicago, has a focus in shoulder and elbow surgery. Mark Schickendantz, MD.
Dr. Schickendantz is on staff in the department of orthopedic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic main campus, Lutheran Hospital and Marymount Hospital. He earned his medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed a fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo. Kim Stearns, MD. Dr. Stearns is an orthopedic surgeon with Ohio City Orthopaedics. Thomas Mehlhoff, MD. Dr. Mehlhoff practices with the Fondren Orthopedic Group in Houston. He earned his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and completed a fellowship with Mayo Clinic. Dr. Dillingham serves as an adjunct clinical professor of orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at Stanford. He is a former team physician for the San Francisco 49ers.

St. Louis Cardinals


Rick Wright, MD. Dr. Wright sees patients at the Orthopedic Surgery Center in St. Louis and Washington University Orthopedics in Chesterfield, Mo. He earned his medical degree from the University of Missouri and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Wright's area of interest is arthroscopy, and he has published several books and articles on the subject.

Michael J. Milne, MD.
Dr. Milne is a physician with The Orthopedic Center of St. Louis and is a member of the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and completed a sports medicine fellowship at Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vali, Colo. Dr. Milne is affiliates with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. In the past he has served as a team physician with the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and US Ski Team.

Tampa Bay Rays


James Andrews, MD. Dr. Andrews practices at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center. He has authored several scientific articles and books. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine and completed his residency at Tulane Medical School. Dr. Andrews serves on the medical and safety advisory committee of USA Baseball and on the board of Little League Baseball. In addition to the Rays, he serves as the senior orthopedic consultant for the Washington Redskins and is co-medical director of the Ladies Professional Golf Association.

Michael Reilly, MD.
Dr. Reilly is the director of the center for knee, shoulder and hip at Broward Orthopaedic Specialists. He earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and completed an internship ant the University of Utah. He has authored several publications and is an assistant clinical professor for the University of Florida residency training program. Dr. Reilly also serves as a team physician for the United States Swimming Team.

Koco Eaton, MD.
Dr. Eaton practices at Eaton Orthpaedics. He earned his medical degree from Johns Hopkins Medical School and completed his residency at Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Dr. Eaton completed a sports medicine fellowship in Birmingham and has received a patent for knee surgery utilizing minimally invasive incisions. Among his other accomplishments, Dr. Eaton has written many orthopedic articles and currently is a faculty member at the University of South Florida.

Texas Rangers


Keith Meister, MD. Dr. Meister is the director of Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. He earned his medical degree from the Boston University Combined BA/MD Program and completed his residency at the Boston University Medical Center. He has completed efellowships in sports medicine, hand surgery and knee surgery. Dr. Meister is a member of the American Orthopaedics Society for Sports Medicine and the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Society. He is the head team physician for the Texas Rangers and has served as head team physician with the Dallas Stars.

Toronto Blue Jays


Allan Gross, MD. Dr. Gross is head of the orthopedic surgery division at Mount Sinai Hospital is this the one in NY?. He received his medical degree from the University of Toronto. Dr. Gross has a special interest in reconstruction of the lower extremity and has published on the use of the allograft bone in revision arthoplasty of the hip and knee. Currently, Dr. Gross holds a full professorship in the department of surgery at the University of Toronto.

Steven Mirabello, MD. Dr. Mirabello practices with Florida Sports Orthopaedic & Spine Medicine. He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed an internship in the UCLA training program. Dr. Mirabello has published several articles on shoulder surgery. Among his many affiliations, Dr. Mirabello is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of The American Sports Medicine Fellowship Society. He serves as a consulting physician for the Philadelphia Phillies and is an associate member of the Association of Major League Baseball Team Physicians.

Jason Smith, MD.
Dr. Smith is on the surgical team at Rouge Valley Centenary in Toronto. He completed his medical residency in sports orthopedic surgery at the American Sports Medical Institute. In addition to his experience with the Blue Jays, he has worked with members of the Washington Redskins and several college athletes.

John Theodoropoulos, MD. Dr. Theodoropoulos is a physician affiliated with the University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital. He earned his medical degree at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and completed his residency at McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Theodoropoulos is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine as well as the Canadian Orthopedic Association. He has an interest in sports medicine and arthroscopy.

Glenn Copeland, MD. Dr. Copeland is a podiatrist with Mount Sinai's sports clinic. He earned his degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. He is the former CEO of Cleveland Clinic Canada.

Washington Nationals


Wiemi Douoguih, MD.
Dr. Douoguih practices orthopedics at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Douoguih areas of interest include the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. In addition to his work with the Nationals, Dr. Douoguih is affiliated with the U.S. Judo team, University of Maryland athletics and the Baltimore Ravens.
