Will Physicians Stop Accepting Medicaid Patients? How Orthopedic Surgeons Compare to Other Specialties

As healthcare reimbursement declines, many physicians have had to reevaluate their patient mix and consider the future of Medicare and Medicaid patients in their practice.

As of 2012, 36 percent of physicians said they will no longer accept new Medicaid patients and 26 percent of physicians said they don't see any Medicaid patients, according to a Jackson Healthcare report.

Physicians limiting the new number of Medicaid patients:
•    Orthopedic surgeons: 50 percent
•    Gastroenterologists: 47 percent
•    Family medicine physicians 45 percent
•    Neurologists: 43 percent
•    Cardiologists: 39 percent
•    Urologists: 35 percent
