Double-Bundle ACL Reconstruction May Increase Knee Kinematics Restoration

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

The double-bundle ACL ligament reconstruction may produce better outcomes for patients with meniscal injuries or significant preoperative pivot shift, according to an article published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

The study used a computer-assisted navigation system in order to conduct biomechanical testing with a standardized Lachman and mechanized pivot-shift examination on 10 paired knees. Researchers evaluated the intact state after complete ACL transaction, medial and lateral meniscectomy and ACL reconstruction, in knees receiving the single-bundle and double-bundle technique.

Researchers found that the double-bundle and single-bundle techniques were equally effective in controlling anterior translation. However, the knees receiving the double-bundle technique showed increased restoration of knee kinematics.
