Study: Common Painkillers Don't Do Much for Chronic Orthopedic Pain

When it comes to chronic bone and joint pain, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are mostly ineffective, according to research published in the Journal of the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Chronic orthopedic pain is defined as pain after the expected period of healing after an injury or trauma.

For best quality and safety of care, the article recommends orthopedic surgeons be completely familiar with all "widely available safe and effective nonnarcotic options for chronic musculoskeletal pain."

Recent research has found opioid-related hospital admissions are on the rise, possibly because of overprescription of narcotics.
