Study: Meniscal Allograft Transplantation Produces Predictable Results

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Meniscal allograft transplantation may result in pain relief and functional improvement in patients and can produce predictable results if the indications are followed properly, according to a study published in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

Data was collected on 49 patients who received 50 meniscal allograft transplantations. Researchers used various methods for comparing knee pain and radiographs to evaluate the progression of osteoarthritis and misalignments in follow-up visits.

A total of 34 patients completed the evaluation and reported a significant decrease in pain scores. There was no increase in osteoarthritis in 58 percent of the patients according to the Kellgren-Lawrence classification.

When strictly following the indications, there was no significant correlation between preoperative cartilage damage, postoperative osteoarthritis, alignment deviation, gender and body mass index. There was no difference in outcome between patients receiving medial and lateral transplants.
