Children's Hospital Foundation receives $1M donation for diabetes sports medicine program — 3 highlights

A $1 million pledge to the Children's Hospital Foundation in Kentucky will establish a diabetes sports medicine program for monitoring and educating children in the Louisville, Ky., area who have type 1 diabetes, according to the Courier-Journal.

Here are three highlights:

 

1. Louisville, Ky.-based Access Wealth Management President Tony Christensen made the pledge in honor of his son, who is a type 1 diabetic.

 

2. The Christensen Family Diabetes Sports Medicine Program will be part of the Wendy Novak Diabetes Care Center, a collaboration between Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, the University of Louisville and University of Louisville physicians.

 

3. The program will conduct research into the management of diabetes in young athletes, as well as strive to provide children and young adults with type 1 diabetes the same level of care that professional athletes with type 1 diabetes receive.
