St. Louis Cardinals' relief pitcher Zach Duke had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery performed by James Andrews, MD, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Here's what you need to know.
1. Mr. Duke was traded the Cardinals from the Chicago White Sox in late-July. He pitched to the end of the season, but was unavailable the final weekend. He is expected to miss the majority of the 2017 season.
2. Dr. Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatment.
3. Dr. Andrews is the orthopedic medical director for the Tampa Bay Rays. He has treated several professional athletes throughout his career.
