Keith Meister, MD, of Arlington, Texas-based TMI Sports Medicine will offer Minnesota Twins pitcher Trevor May a second opinion on his torn ulnar collateral ligament, according to a tweet by St. Paul Pioneer sports columnist Brian Murphy.
Here are four things to know:
1. Mr. May tore his ulnar collateral ligament while pitching in an exhibition games on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
2. Dr. Meister is director of TMI Sports Medicine and has served as the Texas Rangers' head team physician since 2004.
3. Although Tommy John surgery looks like the most likely treatment option, Mr. May is seeking alternative methods, according to MLB Trade Rumors. MLB pitchers with similar injuries have opted for platelet-rich plasma injections, stem cell injections and primary repair surgeries in the past.
4. Mr. May's injury is expected to sideline him for the entire MLB season.
