Boston Celtics superstar Isaiah Thomas injured his hip earlier this month, but after consulting with team physician Brian McKeon, MD, he remains undecided about the best course of action, according to the Boston Herald.
Here are five things to know:
1. Mr. Thomas met with Dr. McKeon yesterday and found he had a right hip labrum tear. Dr. McKeon determined surgery wouldn't be possible until "everything calms down in the hip joint," according to Celtics President Danny Ainge.
2. Dr. McKeon did not clear Mr. Thomas to play, although he will rejoin the team today. Mr. Ainge said Mr. Thomas would not return to play for the rest of the post season.
3. As the team physician, Dr. McKeon is responsible for coordinating care for Mr. Thomas, including visits to additional specialists and diagnostic tests in the future. Mr. Thomas plans to speak with physicians in New York and Boston to seek additional opinions on treatment.
4. Dr. McKeon is an orthopedic surgeon at New England Baptist Hospital and an assistant clinical professor of orthopedic surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. He has been the head team physician and chief medical officer for the Celtics since 2005.
5. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. McKeon participates in clinical trials and investigates sports related injuries with an emphasis on minimally invasive intervention.
