WNBA team Atlanta Dream named Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare its official sports medicine and healthcare provider, The Emory Wheel reports.
Here are five insights:
1. Dream players, staff members and executives will have access to Emory Healthcare facilities, according to Scott Boden, MD, director of the Emory Orthopaedics and Spine Center.
2. Emory previously provided the team with some care coverage, but Emory and Atlanta Dream extended their partnership on Feb. 7. The new arrangements were negotiated over several months. Atlanta Dream will compensate Emory for the medical services it provides, including the time physicians spend traveling with the team. Atlanta Dream president Theresa Wenzel did not disclose the amount of compensation.
3. The expanded partnership begins in March, and Emory physicians are conducting preseason physical examinations before the team's first season.
4. Assistant professor of orthopedics and family medicine at Emory's School of Medicine Brandon Mines, MD, will serve as the team physician. Physical therapist Jessica Cohen will serve as the team's full-time athletic trainer.
5. Emory Healthcare also has partnerships with other professional athletic teams, including the Atlanta Falcons, Braves and Hawks.
