Olympic-gold-winning gymnast Aly Raisman filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Olympic Committee, alleging the committee was aware that former physician Larry Nassar molested athletes who participated with USA Gymnastics, FOX 40 reports.
Here are six things to know.
1. Ms. Raisman filed the suit Feb. 28 in Santa Clara County (Calif.) Superior Court.
2. According to the complaint, Mr. Nassar sexually abused Ms. Raisman at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas, national and international competitions and the 2012 London Olympics.
3. In a statement, Raisman's attorney, John Manly accused the USOC and USA Gymnastics of "a conspiracy to silence victims and cover up the largest child sex abuse scandal in history."
4. USA Gymnastics did not comment on Ms. Raisman's lawsuit but offered support to athletes who have been abused by Mr. Nassar. "USA Gymnastics is committed to doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again by making bold decisions and holding ourselves to the highest standards of care," it said in a statement.
5. USOC announced that CEO Scott Blackmun is stepping down for health reasons. In late January, the USA Gymnastics board of directors resigned, which the USOC required in order to improve the organization and provide a safe environment for gymnasts. USA Gymnastics terminated its agreement with the Karolyi Ranch in January.
6. Separately, the first male gymnast joined a civil federal suit against Mr. Nassar and others associated with the sex abuse scandal. Mr. Nassar molested multiple times, according to the suit. His sister Kamerin Moore, who joined the federal civil suit, was also victimized by Mr. Nassar and testified during his criminal trial in Ingham County, Mich., in January.
The suit has several other plaintiffs and seeks declaratory, injunctive, equitable and monetary relief for injuries.
