Former East Lansing-based Michigan State University dean and Larry Nassar's boss William Strampel, DO, was arrested and charged with criminal sexual conduct, NBC News reports.
Here are eight things to know.
1. Dr. Strampel was arrested March 26 and charged with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, felony official misconduct and two counts of willful neglect of duty.
"Strampel used his office to harass, discriminate, demean, sexually proposition and sexually assault female students in violation of his statutory duty as a public office," special prosecutor Bill Forsyth read from the criminal complaint at a news conference.
2. The complaint alleges that Dr. Strampel abused his position through threats and manipulation "to solicit, receive, and possess pornographic images of women who appear to be MSU students."
3. The willful neglect charges refer to Dr. Strampel's supervision of disgraced former sports medicine physician Mr. Nassar, who molested more than 200 patients under the guise of legitimate medical treatment.
4. In 2014, Mr. Nassar was under investigation for allegedly assaulting Amanda Thomasow. The investigation concluded that his bare-handed penetration "technique" was not sexual in nature. Dr. Strampel ordered Mr. Nassar to have another medical staffer in the room when providing treatment to "anything close to a sensitive area." He also said any skin-to-skin contact needed to be explained in detail. He told police he never followed up after ordering Mr. Nassar to have a third person present during certain treatments.
The willful neglect charges are both misdemeanors.
5. Authorities found a video of Mr. Nassar performing his so-called treatment on Dr. Strampel's work computer, which they seized Feb. 2. Police also found 50 pornographic photos on Dr. Strampel's computers, many of which appear to be pictures of female MSU students, according to the affidavit.
6. The affidavit contains complaints from three other students, who Dr. Strampel sexually propositioned and harassed.
7. Michigan attorney Jamie White, who represents 34 of Nassar's victims, said the charges against Dr. Strampel demonstrate MSU's previous investigations have been poor. He claims that there was a demand for an independent investigation as far back as February 2017 that went ignored.
8. Dr. Strampel already resigned from his position at the MSU School of Osteopathic Medicine, citing health concerns. MSU has moved to revoke his tenure in order to fire him.
